IGAD launches women’s leadership workshop in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee region

DADAAB, Kenya,(LM) The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has launched a three-day Gender Office Capacity-Building Workshop in Dadaab, Garissa County, aimed at strengthening women’s leadership, inclusion, and participation in refugee governance and community decision-making.

The workshop brings together women from refugee and host communities to share experiences, strengthen leadership skills, and build networks focused on peacebuilding, social cohesion, and community resilience.

The participants discussed the role of women in promoting inclusion and supporting stronger, more united communities in areas affected by displacement and social challenges.

Ms. Amina Farah, Gender and Youth Manager for IGAD said the initiative seeks to create platforms that encourage meaningful participation by women in local leadership and governance structures across the region.

Special recognition was given to Amina Farah for her leadership and advocacy for gender equality and women’s empowerment. Participants praised her efforts in advancing opportunities that amplify women’s voices and strengthen their role in community development.

Residents of Garissa were also commended for their hospitality and community spirit, which participants said reflected the values of resilience, unity, and cooperation promoted during the workshop.

The workshop comes as regional organizations and humanitarian partners continue to push for greater inclusion of women in peacebuilding and governance processes across the Horn of Africa.
