Hon. Abdirahman Mohamed Sheikh Honored for Outstanding Leadership and Public Service

Mogadishu, Somalia: Hon. Abdirahman Mohamed Sheikh, Member of the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, has been recognized with the MP Leadership Award by the Somali Leadership Awards in recognition of his commitment to public service, humanitarian work, and the wellbeing of Somali communities.

Representing HOP #070, Hon. Abdirahman has built a public-service career focused on supporting vulnerable communities and contributing to Somalia’s social development, healthcare, and good governance.

Before entering national politics, Hon. Abdirahman spent several years in the Somali diaspora in Australia and New Zealand, where he became actively involved in humanitarian and community initiatives. Among his efforts was supporting Somalis facing serious medical conditions and helping facilitate access to specialized medical treatment, particularly in Australia.

In 2021, he made the decision to leave Australia and return to Somalia, choosing to dedicate his experience and skills to serving his country at a time when Somalia continued to face significant humanitarian, development, and security challenges.

Following his election to the Federal Parliament, Hon. Abdirahman continued his focus on public service and the welfare of vulnerable Somalis. In September 2024, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed him Special Presidential Envoy for Health and Nutrition, providing him with a national platform to advocate for improved healthcare systems, stronger nutrition programmes, and greater access to essential health services.

His contribution to public service has also received recognition at the national level. The Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Health and Nutrition reported that he was recognized as MP Leader of the Year for three consecutive years—2022, 2023 and 2024, alongside recognition for integrity, professionalism, and commitment to parliamentary responsibilities.

The MP Leadership Award presented by the Somali Leadership Awards adds another recognition to his growing record of public service.

Hon. Abdirahman’s journey represents a transition from humanitarian and community service in the diaspora to national leadership in Somalia. His experience abroad exposed him to healthcare and public-service systems in developed countries, while his decision to return home demonstrated his commitment to applying that experience to the needs of the Somali people.

Through his parliamentary responsibilities and his work in health and nutrition, Hon. Abdirahman continues to position public service as a means of supporting vulnerable communities and contributing to Somalia’s recovery and development.
