Somalia’s parliamentary speaker, Abdukadir Mohamed Noor (Jaamac), on Thursday speaking at the growing strategic partnership Dialogue between Somalia and Türkiye, called for stronger cooperation and greater efforts to counter misinformation affecting bilateral ties.
Speaking at a dialogue forum on Somalia-Türkey relations, Abdukadir said the partnership had initially focused on humanitarian assistance before expanding into development and trade and later into broader strategic cooperation.
The relationship now covers areas including diplomacy, economic cooperation and defence, he said, adding that bilateral ties had evolved through different stages marked by various challenges and risks.
Mr. Abdukadir said misinformation and disinformation posed a threat to public trust and could undermine relations between the two countries, which he described as being rooted in shared humanitarian values, Islamic heritage and longstanding historical ties between their peoples.
He also pointed to the growing influence of social media, saying it should receive greater attention in the communication strategies of both countries as a means of promoting accurate information and strengthening public understanding of bilateral relations.
The Speaker said he was confident Somalia and Türkiye, along with their peoples, could protect their shared interests and preserve what he described as productive cooperation between the two countries.
