Former Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi Honored for Distinguished Leadership and National Service

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA: Former Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hon. Ali Mohamed Gedi, has been honored with the Special Leadership Award 2026 in recognition of his longstanding contributions to Somalia’s public service, leadership, peacebuilding, and national development.
“Somalia’s progress depends on unity, responsible leadership, reconciliation, and the strengthening of national institutions. We must continue working together to build a peaceful, stable, and prosperous country for future generations.”
Hon. Ali Mohamed Gedi, who served as Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government from 2004 to 2007, played a significant role during a critical period in Somalia’s history. His tenure focused on rebuilding public institutions, restoring law and order, strengthening governance, supporting reconciliation efforts, and addressing humanitarian and social challenges.
Before entering national political leadership, Hon. Gedi built a distinguished academic and professional career in veterinary medicine. He earned a PhD in Veterinary Pathology and Surgery from the University of Pisa, Italy, following his studies at Somali National University. He subsequently served as an academic and professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Science in Mogadishu.
His career also includes extensive engagement in peace and reconciliation initiatives, humanitarian and development programs, and regional efforts addressing Somalia’s prolonged crisis. From 1992 onward, he participated in and co-organized peace and reconciliation conferences inside and outside Somalia. He later worked with international and regional institutions, including programs supported by the European Commission and the African Union.
Since leaving office as Prime Minister, Hon. Gedi has continued to contribute to discussions on Somalia’s political development, peace and reconciliation, democratization, governance, and regional security.
The Special Leadership Award 2026 recognizes his decades of public service and leadership, indicates his continued commitment to Somalia and his contributions to the country during some of its most challenging periods.
