Chief Justice of Somalia “Customary Law is a solution to disputes that occur within our communities,”

Mogadishu (LM) The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Somalia, Mr. Bashe Yusuf Ahmed, addressed participants at the Scientific Discussion on the Indirect Procedure of the Court, emphasizing the vital role of Customary Law in resolving disputes.
During his remarks, Chief Justice Bashe highlighted that many disputes are effectively settled through customary practices, which significantly alleviates the burden on the formal court system. “Customary Law is a solution to disputes that occur within our communities,” he stated. “By utilizing these established practices, we can streamline the resolution process and provide timely justice.”
He further noted that encouraging the application of Customary Law can enhance cooperation with the rule of law, promoting a more harmonious society. “We must recognize the value of these traditions and integrate them into our legal framework, ensuring that justice is accessible to all,” Bashe added.
The Chief Justice’s comments come as part of ongoing efforts to explore innovative approaches to legal challenges in Somalia. Participants at the discussion expressed support for the integration of Customary Law, acknowledging its relevance in addressing local conflicts.
