Somalia Officials Warn of Worsening Drought as Response Efforts Intensify

MOGADISHU, Somalia — The Manager of the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC), Mr. Hassan Issa, has presented a comprehensive briefing on Somalia’s worsening drought crisis, highlighting urgent humanitarian needs and ongoing response efforts led by the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA).
Speaking at the National Humanitarian Forum, Issa outlined the severe impact of the drought, including widespread food shortages, rising malnutrition, acute water scarcity, and increasing displacement. He warned of growing health and livelihood risks facing vulnerable communities across the country.
The briefing also identified priority districts most affected by the crisis, detailing urgent needs and the current scale of humanitarian interventions.
Issa emphasized SoDMA’s leading role in coordinating the national response, noting strengthened collaboration between government institutions, the United Nations, and humanitarian partners to accelerate the delivery of life-saving assistance.
He called for increased international support, stressing the need for immediate funding, stronger institutional coordination, and a unified response framework led by the Federal Government of Somalia to mitigate the impact of the drought and build long-term community resilience.
