Sudan army accused of killing hundreds in airstrike on Darfur market

Darfur, Sudan – A Sudanese war monitor has reported that the military conducted an air strike on a market in the western Darfur region on Monday, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people. The Emergency Lawyers group, which documents abuses by both sides in Sudan’s ongoing civil war that began in April 2023, described the bombing of Tur’rah market as a “horrific massacre” that also left hundreds injured.
Social media platforms were flooded with videos, some uploaded by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that holds significant control in Darfur. The footage displayed the smoking ruins of market stalls and bodies charred beyond recognition, underscoring the devastating impact of the attack.
In response to the allegations, a military spokesperson denied any intent to target civilians, asserting that the operation focused solely on legitimate hostile targets. The conflicting narratives highlight the ongoing violence and instability in the region as the civil war continues to escalate.
The situation in Darfur remains dire, with humanitarian organizations calling for urgent assistance for those affected by the violence. As the international community watches closely, the need for accountability and protection for civilians has never been more critical.
