Farmaajo Accuses President Mohamud of Undermining Somali Unity and Democratic Process

Mogadishu (LM) Former President of Somalia, Mr. Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, has issued a strong statement criticizing President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing him of jeopardizing the country’s unity and stability. Farmaajo alleges that President Mohamud’s actions, including the “destruction” of the National Consultative Forum and attempts to transform it into a political party, are detrimental to Somalia’s state-building and democratic progress.
Farmaajo stated, “The destruction of the National Consultative Forum and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s destabilizing plan to turn the Forum into his political party threaten the unity and stability of the country, and delay the state-building and democratic process in Somalia.”
The former president also condemned what he described as President Mohamud’s “malicious desire” to hold unilateral elections using an illegitimate electoral commission. He argued that the commission’s formation did not adhere to constitutional and legal procedures, indicating a government intent on conducting elections without proper consensus.
Farmaajo urged President Mohamud to avoid actions that could destabilize the country during the remainder of his term. He called on the current president to prioritize combating terrorism, engaging with states absent from the Forum, and convening the promised National Consultative Forum.
Additionally, Farmaajo appealed to regional state leaders participating in meetings at Villa Somalia, including those from Galmudug, Southwest, Hirshabelle, SSC-Khaatumo, and the governor of the Banadir Region. He urged them to consider the broader national interest and avoid aligning with political processes and parties that lack a legal basis, which he warned could lead to political division.
This statement from former President Farmaajo underscores the ongoing political tensions in Somalia and highlights concerns about the direction of the country’s democratic transition.
