AUC Chairperson Congratulates Malawi’s President-Elect, Peter Mutharika

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has extended heartfelt congratulations to Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika on his victory in the 16 September 2025 General Elections in the Republic of Malawi.
In his statement, the Chairperson praised the people of Malawi for their enthusiastic, peaceful, and orderly participation throughout the electoral process, highlighting the credibility of the democratic system in place.
The Chairperson also commended H.E. President Lazarus Chakwera and the presidential candidate of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) for their gracious concession of defeat, even before the official announcement of the election results by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
Further appreciation was directed to H.E. Hailemariam Dessalegn Boshe, former Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, who led the AU-COMESA Joint Election Observation Mission to Malawi, along with H.E. Ambassador Ashraf Rashed, Chair of the COMESA Committee of Elders, for their effective leadership during the mission.
The Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to implementing Agenda 2063, which emphasizes the promotion and safeguarding of constitutional democracy and inclusive governance across all AU Member States.
