AUC Chair Calls for Urgent Action on Food Systems Transformation at UNFSS+4

Addis-Ababa – At the recent United Nations Food Systems Summit Plus 4, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chair of the African Union Commission (AUC), delivered a compelling call to action emphasizing the critical need for food systems transformation. He underscored that this transformation is not merely a moral imperative but a strategic necessity vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), particularly in efforts to end hunger, reduce poverty, and build climate-resilient economies.
Youssouf noted Africa’s proactive initiatives, including the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and the Kampala Declaration, alongside the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He noted ambitious investment targets of $40 billion aimed at creating resilient, inclusive, and climate-smart food systems across the continent.
However, he cautioned that Africa cannot tackle these challenges alone. “Global partners must honor their commitments, unlock financing, and support African-led solutions,” he stated, urging the international community to collaborate more effectively with African nations.
The Chair’s remarks resonated with delegates, reinforcing the importance of collective action in addressing food insecurity and fostering sustainable development. As Africa continues to take bold steps, the call for partnership and support from the global community remains critical for realizing a sustainable future for all.
