Somali President Signs New Federal Constitution

MOGADISHU, March 8 (LM) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday formally signed the new Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia, marking a major step in strengthening the country’s legal and governance framework after its approval by both houses of parliament.

Speaking to the media during the signing ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu, Mohamud said the government would begin implementing the new constitution immediately, describing it as a cornerstone for strengthening state institutions, protecting citizens’ rights, and advancing Somalia’s democratic system.

“Today marks the conclusion of the long journey of reviewing Somalia’s constitution, which for many years remained provisional and was recently approved by the Federal Parliament,” the president said. “With God’s will, from today onward, we will begin its implementation.”

The signing ceremony was attended by the Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, the Speaker of the Upper House, Senator Abdi Hashi Abdullahi, and the chairpersons of the parliamentary committees responsible for reviewing the constitution.
