Former PM Condemns Government’s Blocking of MPs’ Travel to Puntland

Mogadishu (LM) -Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has strongly condemned what he described as a wrongful decision by the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to block members of the Federal Parliament of Somalia from traveling to Puntland, the region they represent.
Khaire stated that the action not only endangered the lives of the Members of Parliament and civilians traveling on the same aircraft but also undermined the principles of statehood, democracy, and federalism. He further argued that the move weakens public confidence in state institutions, accusing President Hassan Sheikh of using government institutions to advance political interests.
“The Members of Parliament are the legitimate representatives of the people,” Khaire said, emphasizing that it is the government’s duty to respect their constitutional rights and freedom of movement.
He called on President Hassan Sheikh’s administration to urgently clarify the reasons behind the decision and to refrain from actions that could undermine statehood, democracy, national unity, and the cohesion of the Somali people.
