Somali Opposition Leaders Await Presidential Call Ahead of 2026 Elections

Mogadishu (LM) As Somalia gradually moves toward its next presidential election scheduled for 2026, opposition political leaders are increasingly voicing concerns over the absence of a formal consultation process led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Many opposition figures say they are waiting for an official call from the presidency to begin discussions on the timing, framework, and political roadmap of the upcoming election. Oppositions had a meeting in Kismayo in 2025 and called on the president of Somalia to call them for a consultative meeting on January 2026.

The silence from Villa Somalia has triggered growing debate about transparency, inclusivity, and the direction of Somalia’s electoral process.

Opposition leaders argue that meaningful preparations for the 2026 election must begin early to avoid political tension, delays, or disputes similar to those witnessed during past electoral cycles.

As Somalia approaches the 2026 presidential election, the absence of formal engagement between the presidency and opposition leaders has become a growing political concern. While opposition figures wait for a call from President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, analysts warn that delays in dialogue could complicate the electoral process and weaken public confidence.
