Historic Moment in Mogadishu: Citizens Cast Votes in Local Elections After 57 Years

Mogadishu (LM) In a proud and historic moment, citizens of Mogadishu cast their votes in local elections today, marking the first time in 57 years that residents have had the opportunity to participate in such a democratic process. This momentous election represents a significant step forward on Somalia’s journey towards democracy and governance.

The local elections were met with enthusiasm and anticipation as voters lined up at polling stations across the capital early morning on Thursday, eager to exercise their right to choose local leaders. The elections are seen as a vital component of the country’s efforts to stabilize and strengthen democratic institutions after decades of conflict and instability.

“The election that has started here, we want it to spread throughout the south, from Galkacyo to Jubaland,” said Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama.

“Today is a day like no other for me; it is something I have always hoped for that our leaders have now fulfilled.” Nur Hussein Ali, a voter, said.

“I was young 57 years ago, and that election passed me by, but today fortune has favored me.” Father Ahmed Mahmoud Sheikh said,

Security measures were heightened throughout the city to ensure a safe voting environment, allowing citizens to participate freely. Election officials reported a high voter turnout, reflecting the commitment of the Somali people to engage in the democratic process.

“Somali women have a great opportunity today to make their voices heard and choose,” said Sadiya Mohamed Nur, Director of the Women’s Development Department at the Ministry of Family Affairs.

The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, along with the First Lady, Mrs. Qamar Ali Omar, cast their votes today at the National Theater, where the direct elections for the Local Councils of the Banaadir Region were taking place.

Community leaders and international observers hailed the elections as a milestone for Somalia, emphasizing the importance of local governance in rebuilding trust and fostering development. Citizens expressed hope that the new local leaders would address pressing issues, such as security, infrastructure, and social services.

As the votes were cast and counted, this event marked a new chapter in Somalia’s political landscape, inspiring a sense of pride among citizens and reinforcing their determination to build a brighter, more democratic future. The successful execution of these elections is expected to lay the groundwork for future national elections, further consolidating Somalia’s path towards stability and representation.

In a press conference, political opposition leaders expressed their opposition to the elections in Mogadishu, stating that the process is not inclusive, according to them.

After 57 years, today, Mogadishu has opened a new chapter in its democratic history, with the polling stations filled with both the President of the Republic and the citizens of the capital, Mogadishu.

The Somali government, alongside international partners, is committed to supporting this democratic journey, recognizing that local elections are a crucial foundation for a stronger, more resilient Somalia.
