ECOWAS Election Observation Mission Confirms Positive Election Day in Guinea-Bissau

Bissau (LM) — The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, led by Ambassador Issufu Baba Braimah Kamara, says voters turned out in an atmosphere that felt calm and transparent during Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections.

More than 960,000 people registered, and folks showed up to pick a new president and choose 102 members for the National People’s Assembly. ECOWAS sent a high-level team to key polling sites, looking at everything from how the process followed the rules to whether party agents were present and how early people arrived to vote.

The mission’s first impressions? People seemed confident that the voting was fair. ECOWAS says it’s sticking by its commitment to a stronger democracy and clean elections in Guinea-Bissau. Before voting day, ECOWAS brought all its observers together for a planning session.

Ambassador Kamara laid out the group’s regional mission, pushing the importance of staying neutral, following a solid method, and meeting international standards.
