Victory for Somali Football: Omar Abdulkadir Artan Crowned CAF Best Male Referee 2025

Rabat, Morocco – In a momentous achievement for Somali football, referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has been awarded the title of CAF Best Male Referee for 2025 during the prestigious CAF Awards ceremony held on Wednesday evening at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Rabat, Morocco.

Artan has officiated numerous high-profile matches this year, earning him recognition as the top referee on the continent. In a parallel honor, Nabadda from Uganda was named CAF Best Female Referee.

“This is a milestone for the CECAFA refereeing era. We congratulate our top stars, Abdulkadir and Nabadda,” remarked Ali Ahmed, the head of CECAFA refereeing, following the announcement.

Upon receiving the award, Artan expressed his gratitude and acknowledged the support of those who have backed Somali football. He encouraged both Somali and African players to continue elevating their game on the international stage. “I am proud to receive this award. It is a privilege for me,” he stated.

Omar Abdulkadir Artan has made history as the first Somali referee selected to officiate at a FIFA World Cup tournament. He was one of only three center referees chosen from Africa and stands as the sole representative from Sub-Saharan Africa set to officiate at the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2025.

Earlier in his career, Artan etched his name in history as the first Somali referee to officiate a continental final, overseeing Egypt’s Pyramids FC triumph over South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns in Cairo. He has also served as a referee in matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This recognition marks a significant step forward for Somali football and reflects the growing role of Somali officials in international football.
