Urgent Call for Unity and Democratic Progress in Somalia

Mogadishu (LM) In a significant move towards national stability, the Federal Government of Somalia, in collaboration with key leaders from the Somali Salvation Forum, has issued a joint communiqué emphasizing the critical importance of national unity, political stability, and collective governance.

The statement was made public by notable figures including Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, former Speaker of the House of the People; Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, former Speaker of Parliament and President of the South West State; former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke; and former Minister Dahir Mahmoud Gele, who serves as the Spokesperson for the Somali Salvation Forum.

Key Points from the Communiqué:

  1. Strengthening Independence and Unity: The leaders agreed to reinforce the independence and unity of the Federal Republic of Somalia (FRS).
  2. Enhancing Security: A consensus was reached to work together to improve national security and continue efforts to liberate areas still held by insurgents.
  3. Electoral Process: The Federal Parliament will elect the President of the FRS, while Regional State Assemblies will choose their leaders and deputies.
  4. Prime Minister Appointment: The President will have the authority to appoint the Prime Minister, subject to the House of the People’s approval, with the option to withdraw confidence.
  5. Recognition of Political Parties: Any party securing at least 10% of the federal parliament members will be recognized as a national party.
  6. 2024 Electoral Law: The upcoming electoral process will adhere to the 2024 Electoral Law, incorporating the communiqué’s stipulations.
  7. Immediate Elections: Speedy elections for local councils, regional governments, and the Federal Government were agreed upon.
  8. Constitution Completion: There is an urgent need to finalize the remaining chapters of the Federal Constitution to ensure legality in the state-building process.
  9. Direct Electoral Participation: Both government and opposition will jointly participate in the direct electoral process for local councils and both Houses of the Federal Parliament.

In light of the consensus achieved amid previous disagreements, the leaders urged political stakeholders to unite and actively engage in the democratization process of Somalia.

This collaborative effort marks a pivotal step towards a more stable and democratic future for Somalia, as the country continues to navigate its complex political landscape.
