National Consultation Forum: We are seeking dialogue and consultation!

Mogadishu (LM) The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Xasan Sheekh Maxamuud, has launched the National Consultation Forum to discuss the country’s political future, particularly the strengthening of national unity, the completion of the constitution, the electoral process, the fight against terrorism, and the enhancement of statehood.

In his speech at the forum, the President highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to implement a direct electoral system, allowing the Somali people to choose their leaders fully. He noted that both political parties, opposition and government alike, are united in the belief that there should be no return to the indirect electoral process that compromised the integrity and democracy of elections.

“This platform demonstrates our prioritization of listening to diverse perspectives related to governance. As a government, we are seeking dialogue and consultation, which have previously been lacking in the leadership of the country and the administration. The door to consultation and dialogue is open, and everyone is invited to participate in building the governance process that we aspire to achieve.”

President Xasan Sheekh emphasized that while international partners have supported Somalia to the best of their ability, the responsibility for completing statehood lies primarily with the Somali people and politicians.

“The world has supported us with what we need, but there remains work that is our responsibility – we must genuinely unify as Somalis to determine the future of our country,” he stated.

For their part, former national leaders, federal and regional officials, Somali stakeholders participating in the forum, and scholars spoke about their role in implementing a unified vision based on the solidarity of the Somali people, expressing their commitment to support the government’s efforts towards building an inclusive state, which would serve as a foundation for peace, justice, and sustainable development.
