Somalia Calls for Dissolution of C6+ Diplomatic Forum

Mogadishu (LM) The Federal Government of Somalia has officially requested the dissolution of the C6+ diplomatic forum, deeming it outdated and incompatible with the nation’s current political landscape. In a letter addressed to UN Special Representative James Swan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ali Omar (Ali Balcad) emphasized that the forum, established over a decade ago, no longer aligns with Somalia’s progress and aspirations.
“The continuation of the C6+ as a tool for guiding foreign policy is outdated and an obstacle to progress,” Ali Balcad stated. He articulated concerns that the forum, conceived during a time of significant instability, undermines the nation’s sovereignty and perpetuates a perception of external control.
The C6+ Forum was formed in 2010 to unite international stakeholders—including the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Sweden, Ethiopia, the African Union, the European Union, and IGAD—aimed at assisting Somalia in rebuilding its governance structures after prolonged conflict and institutional collapse. The group has been pivotal in supporting electoral processes, peacebuilding efforts, and facilitating the country’s political transition.
Despite its historical significance, the Somali government believes that the time for the C6+ Forum has passed, signaling a new phase in Somalia’s journey toward self-determination and governance. The call for dissolution marks a critical shift in Somalia’s approach to international relations and foreign policy, as the country seeks to assert its sovereignty and chart its course forward.
