Nearly 200 Arrested in Pakistan After Attacks on KFC Outlets Amid Anti-U.S. Sentiment

Islamabad, Pakistan (LM) Authorities have arrested close to 200 individuals in recent weeks following over 10 coordinated attacks on outlets of the U.S.-based fast-food chain KFC. The unrest is attributed to rising anti-U.S. sentiment linked to unconditional American support for Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Since the escalation of hostilities, KFC has faced calls for protests and boycotts from various Islamist groups, who associate the brand with U.S. backing of Israel. Officials report that at least 178 people have been detained in connection with these incidents.

Police in major cities, including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad, confirmed at least 11 separate attacks on KFC restaurants, where protesters armed with sticks vandalized the premises.

In a tragic incident this week, a KFC employee was shot and killed by unknown assailants near Lahore. A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that there was no protest occurring at the time of the shooting and stated that an investigation is underway to determine whether the killing was politically motivated.

The situation underscores the heightened tensions in Pakistan as public sentiment continues to align against perceived U.S. support for Israel during the conflict in Gaza. Authorities are on high alert as they work to manage the unrest and ensure the safety of businesses amid ongoing protests.
