Somali Prime Minister Meets Delegation from the UK Government

Mogadishu, (LM) The Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre, received a delegation from the UK government in his office, led by the United Kingdom’s Ambassador for Human Rights and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ms. Eleanor Sanders.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Hamza extended his congratulations to the UK government on its recent election to the United Nations Human Rights Council. He expressed appreciation for the UK’s significant role in Somalia’s achievements, including the lifting of the arms embargo, debt relief, and the country’s renewed engagement with the UN Human Rights Council.

In providing an update to the delegation, Prime Minister Hamza highlighted that Somalia has established an Independent Human Rights Commission, which has recently been approved by both houses of Parliament. He emphasized that the selection of commission members was based on their merit, expertise, and experience.

Ms. Eleanor Sanders, the UK Ambassador for Human Rights, thanked the Prime Minister for the warm welcome and praised the advancements made in human rights within Somalia.

To conclude the meeting, Prime Minister Hamza, accompanied by the Minister of Family and Human Rights, Ms. Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhsuumi, presented the Ambassador with a certificate of appreciation, acknowledging the UK’s continued support for Somalia.
