Putin backs Iran’s new supreme leader after Khamenei’s death

Mogadishu (LM) Russian President Vladimir Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Iran and pledged continued partnership in a message to Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

“I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,” Putin said in a message addressed to Mojtaba Khamenei, adding that “Russia has been and will remain a reliable partner” to Iran.

Putin also acknowledged the challenges facing Iran’s new leadership.

“At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication,” the Russian leader said.

Mojtaba Khamenei was selected by Iran’s Assembly of Experts to succeed his late father as supreme leader, signaling that hardline factions remain firmly in control of the country’s political establishment.

The clerical body named the 56-year-old mid-ranking cleric as successor more than a week after Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike during a U.S.-Israeli military campaign targeting Iran.
