Egypt and Eritrea Unite to Oppose Ethiopia’s Actions in the Red Sea

Cairo, July 13, 2025 – Egypt and Eritrea have announced a strategic alliance aimed at countering Ethiopia’s influence in the Red Sea region. This agreement comes amid growing tensions over resource management and territorial disputes.

During a recent meeting between Egyptian officials and Eritrean leaders, both countries expressed concerns about Ethiopia’s actions, particularly regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and its potential impact on downstream water resources. The leaders emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to ensure stability and security in the region.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry stated, “We must work together to safeguard our shared interests and protect our sovereignty.” Eritrean officials echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of joint initiatives in addressing regional challenges.

This alliance marks a significant shift in regional dynamics, as both nations seek to bolster their positions and mitigate perceived threats from Ethiopia’s escalating ambitions. The agreement aims to enhance military cooperation and strengthen diplomatic ties between Egypt and Eritrea as they navigate the complexities of the situation in the Horn of Africa.
