Djibouti Honors 25th Anniversary of the Somali Reconciliation Milestone

Arta, Djibouti – The city of Arta in the Republic of Djibouti hosted a national ceremony this morning to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Somali reconciliation conference. The event was attended by His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and His Excellency Ismail Omar Guelleh, President of the Republic of Djibouti, along with ministers, senior officials from both countries, and distinguished guests, including national officials, diplomats, and journalists.

During the ceremony, the two Presidents jointly inaugurated the “Somali Peace Monument,” located at the site of the historic tent that hosted the Arta national reconciliation conference in 2000. This conference was a pivotal moment in Somalia’s history, marking one of the most significant steps towards restoring the country’s statehood after years of civil war.

Additionally, the Arta Museum was inaugurated, showcasing key stages in Somalia’s political and social history from 1960 to 2025. The museum features rare photographs and documents that highlight the journey of building a modern state and the national reconciliation efforts that began in Arta a quarter of a century ago.

The event celebrated one of the most significant political milestones in modern Somali history and paid tribute to the national leaders who established the federal system and built the country’s constitutional institutions.

The ceremony concluded with an art exhibition and a documentary film, illustrating a 25-year journey filled with challenges and achievements. The atmosphere was joyful, reflecting the deep brotherly ties between Somalia and Djibouti and their shared commitment to strengthening peace, unity, and cooperation in the Horn of Africa region.
