African Union Condemns Attack on Port Sudan

Addis Ababa (LM) The African Union (AU) has expressed deep concern and dismay over the recent violent attack on Port Sudan, a strategic city that has remained one of the few relatively stable zones in the Republic of Sudan amid ongoing conflict.

In a strong statement, the AU condemned the attack, describing it as a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict and a direct threat to civilians, humanitarian access, and regional stability. “This aggression not only endangers innocent lives but also disrupts vital humanitarian operations,” the AU spokesperson stated.

Port Sudan has played a critical role as a logistical and humanitarian hub during the current conflict. The AU emphasized that any aggression targeting this city undermines ongoing efforts to stabilize the country. “We must protect these essential infrastructures that support the humanitarian needs of the population,” the spokesperson added.

The AU reiterated its commitment to the protection of civilians and denounced all acts that hinder peace efforts. It called for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of inclusive political dialogue led by African leadership. “We urge all parties to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure safe, unhindered access for humanitarian operations,” the statement emphasized.

Through its High-Level Panel on Sudan, the African Union remains actively engaged in facilitating dialogue and mediating between conflicting parties. The AU called on all stakeholders to support African-led mediation efforts and prioritize the interests of the Sudanese people.

In closing, the AU urged the international community to stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people and intensify efforts to restore peace and stability in the region. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and reaffirm our unwavering support for the people of Sudan in their pursuit of peace, dignity, and national unity,” the statement concluded.
